Anthropic drew a line in the sand — refusing to let AI be weaponized without safeguards. The journalists who covered this story are natural allies for our mission. Join us at the #EarthFirst Startup Weekend to build ethical AI solutions.
In February 2026, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei refused to allow the Pentagon to use Claude — Anthropic's AI model — for mass domestic surveillance or fully autonomous weapons. He called these uses "entirely illegitimate" and described them as "bright red lines" the company would not cross, even at the cost of a $200 million defense contract.
The Pentagon demanded unrestricted "lawful use" of Claude and threatened to blacklist Anthropic, cancel its contract, and invoke the Defense Production Act. Amodei responded publicly: "We cannot in good conscience accede to their request." This standoff has become a landmark moment in the debate over ethical AI governance.
The #EarthFirst Startup Weekend brings together technologists, policymakers, legal experts, and activists to build ethical AI solutions over an intensive weekend. Organized by ALTgovAI, the event focuses on creating real, actionable projects that promote responsible AI governance.
